Digital Trajectories for Architectural Conservation and Restoration in Cultural Heritage. Frameworks and Synergies Between Extended Reality (XR), Digital Twins, and Artificial Intelligence (AI)
The study of historical artefacts now requires in-depth knowledge of their intrinsic and extrinsic characteristics features through the application of an ecosystem of digital technologies for analyze and share information. These technologies include, among others, Extended Reality (XR), Digital Twins (DT), and Artificial Intelligence (AI). When coupled with 3D reality-based survey, 3D modelling and Heritage Building Information Modelling (HBIM), this synergistic analysis shows growing potential in its actual application: a powerful merge of technologies that can support conservation and restoration of Cultural and Architectural Heritage. While DT and the referred parametric structure, are able to build an all-encompassing structured informative models, XR provides the immersive interface for human interaction, defining a dynamic high-fidelity virtual representations of real-world objects. At last, AI can analyze large-scale data, generating insights, predicting future states, and enabling automated decision-making. This synergy can lead to a strong, collaborative system that the be a powerful tool for technicians and architect conservators, especially considering how wars, climate changes and human interventions, coupled with lack of money or resources, threatens the Heritage conservation. The primary goal of this Research Topic is to stimulate research that use XR, Digital Twins, and AI, in their integration and optimization, in the frame of heritage and architectural heritage restoration and conservation. We seek high-quality studies that present tangible advancements and novelty in real-time data fusion, scalability, reliability, accuracy of results that will lead to the next generation of intelligent conservation procedures. Comprehensive reviews are also accepted. The scope of interest includes, but is not limited to, the following topics:1. Novel architectures and theoretical models for integrating XR, AI, and Digital Twins.2. Post-processing of 3D data in the frame of this combination of technologies3. HBIM and Digital Twin creation and management4. Accuracy of data5. Finite Element Analysis6. Segmentation of 2D and 3D data7. NErF/ Gaussian Splatting8. Pattern Recognition9. Data extraction/data analysis/ multi-temporal point clouds10.
