Digital Transformation in Dental Materials: Computational Design, Simulation-Guided Fabrication, and Clinical Performance Optimization

Digital technologies are transforming the development, production and clinical application of dental materials. Advancements in computational modelling, artificial intelligence, digital workflows, and manufacturing methods have supported the design of materials with improved mechanical, biological, aesthetic, and functional properties. However, challenges remain in translating computational predictions and laboratory findings into reliable clinically effective solutions. This Research Topic aims to explore how computational design and simulation-guided fabrication can accelerate innovation in dental materials and improve their clinical performance. We welcome research investigating the relationship between material composition, processing parameters, structural design, and long-term outcomes. To gather further insights into digitally enabled dental material development and its translation into clinical applications, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Digitally designed restorative, prosthodontic, implant, orthodontic, and tissue-engineering materials- Computer-aided material design and development- Computational modelling, finite element analysis, and digital simulation- Artificial intelligence and machine learning for dental materials research- Additive, subtractive, and hybrid manufacturing methods- Relationships between material composition, processing parameters, and structural design- Mechanical, biological, aesthetic, and functional characterisation- Durability, degradation, ageing and long-term performance- Biocompatibility, bioactivity, and tissue–material interactions- In vitro, in vivo, and clinical validation of digitally enabled dental materials Topic editors: Ziad N Al-Dwairi, Leszek A.
