Digital Transformation, Low-Carbon Transition, and Systemic Resilience in Sustainable Food Systems
Modern food systems are undergoing profound shifts amid accelerating global sustainability challenges. Low-carbon development has emerged as a fundamental path to address ecological degradation and climate change, while digital transformation is reshaping production, processing, and distribution across the agricultural value chain. At the same time, building systemic resilience has become essential to manage external shocks such as climate variability, market disruptions, and resource constraints. The convergence of digitalization, low-carbon transition, and resilience-oriented strategies has therefore become a pivotal direction for developing sustainable food systems. This integration aligns with global commitments to carbon neutrality and sustainable development, drawing growing academic, industrial, and policy attention worldwide.Despite these global efforts, many food systems continue to face unbalanced and fragmented development. Excessive carbon emissions, low digital penetration, and fragile supply networks frequently hinder progress toward long-term sustainability goals. Addressing these challenges requires a systemic approach that leverages digital technology to advance low-carbon transformation while strengthening resilience and inclusivity. This Research Topic aims to explore effective strategies and technologies that integrate digital innovation with carbon-smart practices to promote sustainability and circularity in food systems. We seek to highlight practical models, innovative mechanisms, and governance frameworks that facilitate digital upgrading, accelerate decarbonization, and reinforce systemic resilience. The initiative also aims to inform decision-makers with evidence-based insights to support sustainable transformation across diverse food production and supply environments. This Research Topic welcomes contributions examining the intersection of digital development, decarbonization, and resilience in sustainable food systems. We invite original research, review articles, case reports, and short communications that employ theoretical, empirical, or applied approaches. Themes of particular interest include digital-driven carbon reduction, intelligent and resilient supply chain construction, AI- and data-enabled sustainable agriculture, circular economy applications in agri-food systems, and integrated low-carbon management strategies from production to consumption. Submissions focusing on cross-sector solutions, policy design, or technological innovation that enhance adaptability and reduce environmental impact are highly encouraged. Collectively, this Research Topic aims to build a global dialogue advancing the digital and low-carbon evolution of sustainable food systems.
