Digital Wellbeing and Psychological Impacts of Healthy and Problematic Technologies Use in Students

Digital and emerging technologies are profoundly transforming the ways in which children, adolescents, and university students learn, communicate, socialize, and construct their identities. Although these technologies provide significant educational, cognitive, and social opportunities, recent scientific evidence has also highlighted the emergence of problematic patterns of use associated with psychological distress, diminished wellbeing, academic difficulties, and maladaptive online behaviors. In this context, understanding the balance between healthy and problematic engagement with digital technologies has become one of the major contemporary challenges for researchers, educators, psychologists, and society as a whole. Examining the conditions under which technology use may either foster or hinder students’ development is therefore essential within contemporary educational environments. This Research Topic aims to deepen the understanding of the educational, developmental, psychological, and social implications associated with the use of digital and emerging technologies among students. In particular, it seeks to integrate existing evidence regarding both healthy and problematic patterns of technology use, as well as to examine the underlying mechanisms, risk factors, and protective factors involved in technological engagement. The monograph aims to bring together interdisciplinary contributions that address not only the potential negative consequences of excessive technology use, but also the conditions that promote digital wellbeing and adaptive forms of interaction. Particular attention is also devoted to emerging trends such as artificial intelligence, immersive technologies, and new digital ecosystems. Ultimately, this Research Topic aspires to contribute to the development of educational strategies, preventive approaches, and evidence-based interventions that promote balanced and healthy technology use among students.Areas of interest include, but are not limited to, the following:• Digital wellbeing and healthy technology engagement• Problematic smartphone and social media use• Cyberpsychology and online behavior among students• Artificial intelligence and emerging technologies in educational contexts• Emotional, cognitive, and psychosocial outcomes associated with digital technology use• FoMO, emotional regulation, and technology-related psychological risks• Preventive interventions and educational strategies aimed at promoting healthy digital habits. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research articles, Systematic Reviews, Meta-Analyses, Mini Reviews, Longitudinal Studies, Cross-Cultural Research, Theoretical Contributions, Perspectives, and evidence-based Intervention Studies addressing the psychological, educational, developmental, and social impacts of digital and emerging technologies on students.
