Distinct Roles of Adipose Tissue, Skeletal Muscle, and Liver in Metabolic Regulation: From Physiology to Disease

Metabolic health is maintained through the complex interplay between key tissues, including adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and the liver. Adipose tissue plays a critical role in energy storage and endocrine function, while skeletal muscle is pivotal for glucose disposal and lipid oxidation. Additionally, the liver serves as the hub for whole-body nutrient processing. Dysregulation in any of these organs can throw systemic metabolism off balance, leading to conditions like insulin resistance, type 2 diabetes, and non-alcoholic fatty liver disease (NAFLD). Recent studies have begun to unravel these complex interactions, but numerous gaps still exist, necessitating further inquiry into the distinct yet interconnected roles these tissues play in metabolic health. This Research Topic aims to shed light on the specific and combined roles of adipose tissue, skeletal muscle, and liver in maintaining metabolic homeostasis. By harnessing a variety of approaches, including the latest advancements in single-cell technologies, the topic aims to identify organ-specific contributions to insulin resistance and NAFLD. The project seeks to explore underlying molecular mechanisms, inter-organ communications, and potential therapeutic strategies, contributing to a comprehensive understanding that bridges the gap from normal physiological states to disease manifestations. We encourage innovative methodologies and translational approaches, aiming to piece together the holistic puzzle of metabolic regulation. To gather further insights in this multifaceted area, we welcome Original Research and Review articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• The role of adipose-derived lipids and adipokines in hepatic steatosis (NAFLD) and insulin resistance• How exercise and myokines modulate hepatic glucose production and lipid metabolism• How adipose tissue influences muscle insulin sensitivity and how muscle activity regulates adipocyte function• Molecular mechanisms that underline the development of insulin resistance in each organ and how it propagates systemically• The impact of pharmacological interventions on multiple metabolic organs concomitantly. To Authors:If you would like to contribute or have any questions on your submission to the collection, please email to endocrinology@frontiersin.org Topic editors: Huanqing Gao, Zhi Zhang, Donghao Gan, Tingting Geng, PRADEEP KUMAR SHUKLA Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74287/distinct-roles-of-adipose-tissue-skeletal-muscle-and-liver-in-metabolic-regulation-from-physiology-to-disease
