Diversity and Stability in Aquatic Plant Communities, Volume II

This Research Topic is part of the series: Diversity and Stability in Aquatic Plant CommunitiesAquatic plant communities are integral to the health and functioning of freshwater ecosystems, often determining the ecological equilibrium and stability of rivers, streams, and wetlands. They encompass a diverse range of submerged, emergent, and floating plants, supporting the overall balance and resilience of aquatic ecosystems. They play a key role in various ecological and environmental contexts, including ecosystem stability and the global carbon cycle, as well as providing vital habitats for a diverse range of organisms. Several factors shape the aquatic ecosystems, ranging from light, depth, temperature of the water, water flow, and biotic factors, to other external stressors that have over time modified the tolerance and presence of these communities. Despite notable advances, significant knowledge gaps remain regarding how aquatic plant communities respond to rapid environmental change and other multifaceted stressors. This Research Topic aims to deepen our understanding of the complexity and adaptive capacity of aquatic plant communities in the face of shifting environmental conditions. We seek to explore the functional diversity within these communities, investigating the extent to which specific traits influence their interactions both with the abiotic environment and with other organisms. Additional objectives involve examining interactions between plants and other biotic components, as well as how aquatic plant communities respond to biological invasions. Another goal is to examine the diverse responses of wetland vegetation to climate change–driving shifts in environmental conditions. By gathering insights into adaptive strategies, ecological roles, and management approaches, the Research Topic will contribute to the broader goal of enhancing conservation and management strategies of aquatic ecosystems. We invite researchers to submit their original research, review, and methods articles on the following sub-themes:• Taxonomic composition and functional diversity patterns• Biotic interactions between aquatic plants• Biological invasions impacts• Ecological interactions between aquatic plants and other communities• Adaptive strategies of aquatic plants in response to environmental gradients• Plant-flow interactions• Studies on the functional roles of different aquatic plant species• Impact of human interference on altering macrophyte characteristics• Resilient traits and adaptive strategies under changing environmental conditions• Conservation strategies for preserving aquatic plant diversity Topic editors: Igor Zelnik, Mateja Germ, Rui Pedro Rivaes Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/77261/diversity-and-stability-in-aquatic-plant-communities-volume-ii
