Dosage compensation and evolution of the X chromosome

Studies on sex chromosome dosage compensation and the evolution of the X chromosome play a central role in driving our understanding of mechanisms of gene regulation in animal development. Prior work has focused on the mechanisms of dosage compensation in the classical model organisms, D.Melanogaster, C.elegans and eutherian mammals (mouse). In recent years there have been rapid advances that have enabled expansion of the field to consider many other organisms, including plants, mosquitos, birds, marsupial mammals and human. Analysis of these different models using cutting edge genomics and imaging based methods is providing new dimensions in the study of mechanisms of gene regulation, sex chromosome evolution, and disease. This Research Topic is aligned with the 2026 EMBO workshop ‘Dosage compensation and evolution of the X chromosome’ which will take place in Sapporo, Japan. The Topic aims to bring together leading reviews and original research articles related to dosage compensation and sex chromosome biology across a diverse range of model organisms. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:· X chromosome inactivation and chromosome upregulation in mammals· X chromosome reactivation in the germ line and in experimental reprogramming· Sex chromosome biology in mammals· Dosage compensation and sex chromosome biology in other vertebrates· Dosage compensation and sex chromosome biology in invertebrates· Dosage compensation and sex chromosome biology in plants· The human X chromosome and disease· Evolution of the sex chromosomes· Genomics and imaging based methodologies for the study of sex chromosome biologyTypes of contribution:· Methods· Mini Review· Opinion· Original Research· Perspective· Review Topic editors: Neil Brockdorff Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/86288/dosage-compensation-and-evolution-of-the-x-chromosome
