Drones and Citizen Science for Invasive Plant Management
The integration of citizen science with advanced drone technology presents a novel approach to environmental monitoring and management, particularly in addressing the challenges posed by invasive species. This research topic aims to explore the effectiveness of utilizing drone-based methodologies for the inventory and monitoring of invasive plant species along riverbanks, with a focus on the collaboration between researchers and local communities. Grounded in the recent advancements in remote sensing and citizen engagement, the study will investigate how drones can provide comprehensive data collection capabilities, while citizen scientists contribute to the validation and interpretation of this data. Building on historical efforts in invasive species management, this research will analyze the potential of this combined approach to improve the accuracy and efficiency of invasive species detection and eradication. Furthermore, it will examine the socio-environmental impacts of involving the public in high-tech ecological conservation efforts, aiming to enhance community awareness and foster sustainable environmental practices. This research aligns with the objectives of the Environmental Citizen Science section, contributing to knowledge co-production and the achievement of sustainable development goals related to life on land and sustainable communities.
