Droplet Dynamics and Control in Microfluidic Platform for Enhanced System Design

Microfluidics is a rapidly evolving field that plays a crucial role in lab-on-a-chip technologies, chemical analysis, and biological diagnostics. One of the major challenges in microfluidic systems is achieving precise control over droplet behavior, which is influenced by flow conditions, fluid properties, including biological constituents, external fields (electrical, magnetic, acoustic, etc.), channel geometry, and surface physicochemical characteristics. Although significant advances in experimental and computational studies have been made over the past decade, a comprehensive understanding of droplet dynamics under these coupled effects still requires focused research efforts. This Research Topic aims to explore the following specific areas and invites both experimental and computational contributions (original research article and review article) in the field, including but not limited to:o Active and passive droplet sorting techniqueso Droplet generation using porous media and low-cost paper-based microfluidic platformso Electrohydrodynamic effects on droplet manipulation and controlo Acoustic-based droplet sorting and separationo Nanoparticle synthesis and manufacturing using droplet microfluidicso AI-driven droplet control and real-time microfluidic automationo Droplet-based platforms for single-cell analysiso Energy harvesting droplet systemso Droplet applications in spheroid and organoid formationo Droplet-based digital PCRo Magnetic levitation of droplet for biological applicationsThis Research Topic welcomes research submissions in the forms of Original Research, Review, Mini Review & Opinion articles.
