Durability of Alkali-Activated Materials: Mechanisms, Transport Properties and Predictive Modelling
Alkali-activated materials and geopolymers are promising low-carbon alternatives to Portland cement, providing viable pathways to valorize by-products such as fly ash, slag, and calcined clays. Their long-term durability, however, is highly sensitive to precursor chemistry, activator type and pore-structure evolution, leaving service-life performance far less established than for conventional concrete. Real-world degradation - whether driven by chloride ingress, sulfate attack, carbonation, acid exposure, freeze–thaw cycles, high temperature, or radioactive waste environments - involves complex, coupled chemical and transport processes.
