Durability of Low Carbon Cement-based Systems

The increasing environmental awareness regarding cement-based materials in particular, has focused the attention of both industry and applied research on the development of cements with a lower environmental impact, reduced CO₂ emissions, and lower energy consumption. On the one hand, this target can be achieved by reducing the clinker content in concrete. On the other hand, an environmental impact reduction can be reached by using supplementary cementitious materials as partial replacements for clinker. These new cements and mineral additives are still relatively unknown in terms of their long-term durability and service life, since clinker-based Portland cements have been, and continue to be, widely used cements materials used in construction. It is therefore necessary to understand how these new low-clinker cement types behave over time within concrete structures, to maintain, the actual level of durability. The main objective of this collection is to gather knowledge on the use of cements incorporating limestone, ground granulated blast-furnace slag, and silica fume, which represent the traditional generation of supplementary cementitious materials (SCMs), as well as on cements containing construction and demolition Waste (CDW), finely ground recycled concrete materials, and other next-generation supplementary cementitious materials. These include, for example, wood ashes, ashes from waste incineration where their use is feasible, ashes derived from agro-food waste, and other mineral additions exhibiting partially cementitious, pozzolanic, or hydraulic properties. This Research Topic welcomes contributions on the following:• Use of new cements with low clinker content • Carbonated waste fines as an SCM• New mineral additions• Durability of new cement-based systems and concrete• Durability of new sustainable concrete and microstructure• Limestone-calcined clay cements durability• Recycling potential and durability of new cements and concrete Topic editors: Christian Silvio Paglia, Bolanle Deborah Ikotun, Ana Mafalda Matos, Claudiane Ouellet-Plamondon Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85364/durability-of-low-carbon-cement-based-systems
