Dynamics and Control in Neural and Neuro-inspired Systems

A scientific quest of extraordinary interest and importance is to understand in a mathematically and computationally rigorous manner how neural systems perform their functions. This grand challenge is fundamentally interdisciplinary, integrating dynamics, control theory, computational neuroscience, and artificial intelligence. This special issue aims to foster a cross-disciplinary discourse among these fields with the general objective of developing a rigorous framework for neural and neuro-inspired systems. The goal of the special issue is to explore from a control and dynamical systems perspective how neural systems perform their functions, including but not limited to decision making, learning, memory, regulation, internal model identification, sensorimotor control, and attention. We consider models, methods, analyses, and theories that provide insight on these neural functions and which may inform next generation architectures and algorithms. We invite contributions in areas including, but not limited to: neuromorphic control, energy efficient neural computations, flexibility and robustness in neural systems, spiking control systems, modeling and control of brain function in health and disease; central pattern generators, adaptive and optimal control in neuroscience, neural rhythms and synchronization, analysis of bio-physical models, sensorimotor control and regulation, data-driven control of neural systems, state estimation, and neurostimulation. Studies across all spatio-temporal scales are within scope.
