Early Cataract Diagnostics and Therapeutic Intervention

Cataracts, recognized as the leading cause of blindness, necessitate over 26 million surgeries annually, the only treatment method available currently. Given the ageing global demographic, there is a critical demand for non-surgical therapeutic alternatives. Varying rates of cataract development across different regions and genetic backgrounds have revealed diverse molecular mechanisms at play in lens homeostasis, suggesting that cataracts may not be an unavoidable aspect of ageing. This awareness opens avenues to potentially slow or prevent cataract development by enhancing these molecular processes, aiming to align the eye lens's lifespan more closely with increased human life expectancies attributed to medical advances. This Research Topic is dedicated to fostering the development of molecular-level diagnostic methods that can detect cataracts at early stages and to enhancing drug discovery efforts aimed at preventing cataracts or halting their progression. Modern diagnostic techniques predominantly detect cataracts once they manifest physically, by which stage significant damage is often irreversible. Introducing diagnostics that can identify molecular changes early would pave the way for preventative interventions more effectively than current methods allow. In pursuit of these objectives, the research will centre on several key areas, though not limited to these alone:• Development of advanced models capable of identifying minute structural changes in the lens.• Innovations in quantifying the efficacy of drug delivery systems specific to lens treatments.• Exploration and screening of new compounds, alongside profiling existing candidates that exhibit potential in modifying cataract progression.•By advancing diagnostic tools and establishing reliable cataract models for drug testing, This research theme aims to shift the paradigm from managing visible cataract symptoms to preventing their onset at a molecular level, essentially extending the health of the lens to match extended lifespan expectations.
