Earthquake-Induced Geohazards and Geotechnical Risks
Earthquake-induced geohazards and geotechnical risks represent crucial challenges within the broader earth sciences. Seismic events frequently trigger secondary hazards such as landslides, soil liquefaction, and surface deformation, with significant impacts on landscapes, natural resources, and societal safety. The past decade has seen advances in our understanding of these phenomena through field observations, laboratory investigations, and numerical modeling, but major knowledge gaps remain in predicting geohazard occurrence, understanding post-earthquake hazard evolution, and integrating multi-scale data to improve risk assessments. Moreover, debates continue over the interplay between geological settings, seismic forces, and geohazard mechanisms, emphasizing the need for research that connects geotechnical processes to large-scale earth science questions, rather than strictly to technical engineering or construction solutions. This Research Topic aims to unify studies that advance our knowledge of how earthquakes induce geohazards and how these processes contribute to the broader understanding of Earth system dynamics and risk. We seek contributions that explain the drivers, mechanisms, and effects of earthquake-related hazards in ways that are relevant to landscape evolution, hazard mapping, vulnerability assessment, and the integration of earth science methodologies. Key questions of interest include the evolving relationship between site conditions and seismic ground response, the patterns and processes of post-seismic hazard development, and the effectiveness of scientific approaches to risk reduction—provided these are situated within a clear earth science framework. The scope of this Research Topic is intentionally limited to studies that enhance fundamental and applied earth science knowledge on seismic hazards, explicitly excluding work focused solely on the technical aspects of mining engineering, construction engineering, rock mechanics, or material properties without broader geoscientific relevance.
