Education Leadership in an Anti-Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI) Era

Across the globe, the ethical principles of equity, diversity and inclusion have come under fire. The Trump administration has made a concerted effort to eliminate all DEI programs, activities and references to the principles underlying DEI in U.S. colleges, schools and other institutions. Federal funding for such programs and initiatives has been withdrawn and personnel responsible for managing the activities have lost their positions. This research topic aims to investigate the effects of this reversal on students, families, teachers, faculty members and institutions themselves. How have educators responded to this abrupt change in policies? To what extent have consequences such as: curricular restrictions, loss of freedom of expression, research limitations and changes to leadership prioritizing shaped and continue to shape educational environments? Researchers from around the globe are invited to submit scholarly contributions from diverse perspectives that focus on equity, inclusion and diversity in education. Key areas of interest include but are not limited to: • The history of DEI programs, initiatives policies and practices. Where did DEI come from and why?• What is happening in different U.S states in the realms of policy, law, and governance?• How have institutions such as schools and colleges responded? (e.g. with preemptive compliance, compliance, resistance etc.)• What are leadership and/or organizational responses and strategies under constraint?• How are faculty, administrators, teachers and staff dealing with the chilling effect on people and their work?• The role of evidence versus rhetoric. What are important contributions of DEI and what are the implications for decreasing this focus?• Critics of DEI argue both that the policies and practices went too far and that the policies and practices did not go far enough. What are best ways forward to achieve the desired outcomes of DEI policies? • International and comparative perspectives. To what extent are educational policies at the national, state, regional and/or local level grounded in the principles of equity, inclusion and diversity?• Technology/AI and Data under anti-DEI authoritarianism.
