Educational Disparities, Social Inequalities, and their Life-Course Impact on Health

Educational equity is increasingly recognized as a crucial dimension of life-course epidemiology and public health, given its profound and far-reaching influence on population health trajectories. Extensive and persistent disparities in educational access and outcomes—shaped by race, ethnicity, socioeconomic status, gender, language, immigration status, disability, and space—continue to contribute to the unequal distribution of health, wellbeing, and opportunity throughout the lifespan. Current research highlights how intersecting systems of disadvantage embedded within educational practices (such as funding allocation, school climate, and admission streaming processes) perpetuate environments that limit health, amplify risk, and entrench disadvantages for minoritized and marginalized populations. Despite mounting evidence for these connections, there remains a critical gap in our understanding of how educational systems serve both as contexts and drivers for health inequalities observable across generations and social groups. This Research Topic aims to explore and advance the field’s understanding of the mechanisms linking educational disparities, social inequalities, and health outcomes over the life-course. By focusing on structures of inequalities within educational systems, this collection aims to surface pathways through which discrimination and exclusion become embodied as persistent health disparities, as well as highlight effective institutional and community-level interventions. Our objectives include elucidating the impact of discriminatory educational practices throughout key life transitions, amplifying scholarships that interrogates root causes of inequity, and evaluating transformative models that support historically excluded populations. The scope of this Research Topic is intentionally intersectional and spans multiple socio-ecological levels, centering on educational institutions and experiences as both domains and determinants of health disparity across the life-course. This collection welcome articles that address, but are not limited to, the following themes:o Interplay of race, ethnicity, class, language, disability, and geography in shaping educational and health trajectories across the lifespan.o Effects of segregation, resource allocation, and discriminatory practices on health over developmental and generational timeframes.o Community-driven and participatory approaches for advancing health equity through educational reform and empowerment.o Culturally and linguistically responsive pedagogies, policies, and research paradigms reducing barriers to health and education.o Innovations in curriculum, faculty development, and institutional transformation to mitigate cycles of educational disadvantage.o Evaluation methods and outcomes for interventions targeting educational determinants of health disparity.o Analyses of the social and psychological implications of exclusion, marginalization, and educational trauma across different life stages.
