Electro-Mechanical Responsive Biomaterials for Biophysical Stimulation
Biophysical stimulation, including mechanical strain, electrical currents, and electromagnetic fields, is profoundly influential in healthcare and regenerative medicine. Many tissues display intrinsic electroactive and mechanoresponsive properties, which has driven the advancement of stimuli responsive biomaterials designed to dynamically interface with biological systems. New generations of smart materials have been developed recently, such as conductive polymers, piezoelectric and triboelectric systems, that modulate biophysical signals to promote tissue repair, guide cell behavior, and enhance regenerative outcomes. While progress has been impressive, significant opportunities remain to understand how the structure and properties of these electro-mechanical materials influence their regenerative function, as well as to optimize their biocompatibility, strength and stability of their biophysical stimulation, and their integration with complex tissue environments. This Research Topic aims to advance innovative electro-mechanically responsive biomaterials for controlled biophysical stimulation, with a particular emphasis on dissecting the structure–property–function relationships that drive success in regenerative medicine. The central focus is on materials science based platforms where electroactive or mechanoresponsive features are engineered to influence cell and tissue behavior, provide spatiotemporal control of stimulation, and support tissue regeneration. We seek both experimental and computational studies that clarify how material composition, architecture, and physical responsiveness collectively determine biological performance, as well as translational research linking these platforms to clinical or preclinical regenerative applications. The scope of this Research Topic will focus on structure–property–function relationships in electro-mechanical biomaterials and their application to regenerative medicine through biophysical stimulation. Peripheral areas such as biosensing, bioelectronics, and therapeutic delivery should be discussed only in the context of their direct relevance to biophysical stimulation and regenerative outcomes. To gather further insights in this area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Design and engineering of electro-mechanical responsive biomaterials for tissue stimulation and regeneration- Structure–property–function relationships in conductive, piezoelectric, triboelectric, or adaptive materials- Biomimetic and adaptive materials enabling spatiotemporal control of biophysical cues- Hybrid biointerfaces and implantable or wearable devices for regenerative biophysical stimulation- Biocompatibility, degradation, device performance, and long-term functional stability in regenerative applications Topic editors: Ritopa Das, Sneha Singh, Khanh Tran Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/78519/electro-mechanical-responsive-biomaterials-for-biophysical-stimulation
