Electrochemical Biointerfaces: Mechanisms, Materials and Applications

Electrochemical biointerfaces play a pivotal role in technologies that integrate biological systems with electrochemical transduction, including biosensors, bioelectronic devices, diagnostic platforms, and environmental monitoring systems. These interfaces govern key processes such as biomolecular recognition, electron and ion transfer, adsorption phenomena, and signal generation. Recent advances in materials chemistry, nanotechnology, and surface engineering have enabled the development of sophisticated electrode materials and biofunctionalized surfaces with improved sensitivity, selectivity, and stability. At the same time, increasing attention is being directed toward understanding how surface properties, including chemistry, morphology, charge distribution, and wettability, influence the biological interactions and electrochemical performance. Despite substantial progress, the relationships between interfacial characteristics, bioelectrochemical mechanisms, and device functionality remain insufficiently understood, highlighting the need for further fundamental and applied research in this rapidly evolving field. The aim of this Research Topic is to advance the understanding and engineering of electrochemical biointerfaces by bringing together studies that explore the relationships between interfacial properties, biomolecular interactions, and electrochemical performance. Despite significant progress in materials design and surface functionalization, the mechanisms focusing on charge transfer, signal transduction, and biological recognition at electrochemical interfaces remain incompletely understood. This collection welcomes contributions addressing innovative materials, biofunctionalization strategies, advanced characterization techniques, and emerging applications of electrochemical biointerfaces. Particular emphasis is placed on studies that provide mechanistic insights and establish structure-property-performance relationships, supporting the rational design of next-generation biosensors, bioelectronic devices, and analytical platforms. This Research Topic welcomes original Research articles, Reviews, Mini Reviews and Perspectives focusing on fundamental and applied aspects of electrochemical biointerfaces.
