Electrochemical Capacitors and Supercapacitors: From Materials to Devices

Electrochemical capacitors (ECs), commonly known as supercapacitors or ultracapacitors, have emerged as critical energy storage technologies bridging the gap between conventional capacitors and batteries. Their unique combination of high power density, rapid charge–discharge capability, long cycle life, and broad operating temperature range positions them as indispensable components in applications ranging from electric vehicles and renewable energy systems to portable electronics and grid-scale storage solutions.Despite significant advances over the past decade, several fundamental and applied challenges persist. These include improving energy density without compromising power performance, developing scalable and cost-effective electrode materials, understanding charge storage mechanisms at the electrode–electrolyte interface, and translating laboratory-scale innovations into commercially viable devices. This Research Topic aims to bring together cutting-edge contributions from materials scientists, electrochemists, device engineers, and energy system researchers to address these challenges comprehensively. We welcome original research articles, reviews, and perspective pieces covering, but not limited to, the following subtopics:- Novel electrode materials for EDLCs, pseudo-capacitors, and hybrid supercapacitors, including carbon-based materials (graphene, carbon nanotubes, activated carbon, MXenes), metal oxides, conducting polymers, and composite architectures- Electrolyte engineering, including aqueous, organic, ionic liquid, solid-state, and gel polymer electrolytes and their influence on electrochemical performance and safety- Charge storage mechanisms and in-situ/operando characterization techniques for elucidating interfacial phenomena- Device design and fabrication, including flexible, wearable, micro-supercapacitors, and asymmetric/hybrid configurations- Scalability and manufacturing, addressing the transition from material synthesis to prototype and commercial devices- Energy and power density optimization strategies and their trade-offs- Integration with energy harvesting systems, such as solar cells, triboelectric nanogenerators, and fuel cells- Computational modelling and simulation of electrode materials and electrolyte interactions- Sustainability and green synthesis of electrode materials, recycling, and lifecycle assessment- Applications in electric mobility, smart grids, IoT, and biomedical devicesBy spanning the full spectrum from fundamental materials discovery to device-level engineering, this collection seeks to accelerate innovation and foster cross-disciplinary dialogue in the field of electrochemical energy storage.
