Electronics for Human-Centric Edge AI: Wearable Devices, Circuits, and Systems for Intelligent Sensing and Health
Artificial intelligence is moving out of the data center and onto the device. A new generation of intelligent applications—health monitoring, ambient sensing, connected industrial systems—now depends on electronics that can sense, process, and act at the edge, close to the user and the data source. This shift places new demands on hardware: sensors must be smaller, more sensitive, and wearable; circuits must run inference under tight power, latency, and form-factor budgets; and complete systems must integrate sensing, computation, and connectivity reliably in the real world. Meeting these demands is fundamentally an electronics problem, spanning materials and devices through circuits, architectures, and integrated systems. Progress requires innovation at every layer of the stack, from bioelectronic sensing front-ends to energy-efficient edge-AI accelerators, purpose-built to bring intelligent behavior to AI-powered IoT and wearable platforms. This Research Topic aims to advance the electronic devices, circuits, and systems that enable human-centric, AI-powered IoT and wearable intelligence at the edge. As intelligent applications become more pervasive and personal, there is a growing need for hardware designed from the ground up to run sensing and inference efficiently on-body and in the field. We seek contributions that push the electronics forward: novel sensor devices and bioelectronic front-ends, low-power and neuromorphic circuits for on-device inference, energy-aware architectures, and integrated systems that combine sensing, computation, and connectivity. We particularly welcome work where the hardware is designed and experimentally validated for a real AI-powered IoT or wearable application—for example, an edge-AI accelerator benchmarked on live sensor data or a wearable sensing platform demonstrated in continuous health monitoring. The goal is to define what efficient, reliable, on-device intelligence requires across the full electronics stack, from materials to deployed systems. We invite Original Research, Reviews, Methods, Perspectives, and Technology and Code articles. Contributions must center on the electronics—devices, circuits, systems, or architectures. Purely algorithmic or software work with no hardware contribution is outside the scope of the journal. Areas of interest include, but are not limited to:• Wearable, flexible, and bioelectronic sensors and sensing front-ends• Low-power, neuromorphic, and edge-AI circuits and accelerators• Energy-efficient architectures for on-device inference• Integrated AI-powered IoT systems: sensing, computation, and connectivity• Hardware for continuous, real-world health and activity monitoring• Reliability, integration, and power management of edge and wearable devices Manuscripts should clearly demonstrate the electronic hardware contribution and, where relevant, its validation in an AI-powered IoT or wearable application.
