Embedding Resilience in Socio-Technical Transitions: Governance Pathways for Environmental Justice and Inclusive Sustainability
The accelerating urgency of climate change, resource depletion, technological disruption, and widening social inequalities has intensified global debates on how societies can transition towards more resilient sustainable and just futures. While socio-technical transitions research has provided valuable insights into the dynamics of systemic change across energy, mobility, food, and urban systems, less attention has been paid to how such transitions can be governed in ways that centre equity, justice, and inclusivity. The Research Topic seeks to put together a series of cutting-edge studies and policy-relevant insights whose focus is on how resilient sustainability transitions can be governed in ways that prioritise inclusivity, justice, and equity. Ultimately, the research focus aims to interrogate the power dynamics and institutional set up that drives transformative change within socio-technical systems. This would stimulate interdisciplinary dialogue and foster context-sensitive contributions that can lead to a shift from the conventional delivery mechanisms. The themes of call for papers are:1. Resilient governance innovations and institutional reforms that embed environmental justice within sustainability transitions2. Community-led and grassroots transition pathways, and their implications for socio-technical governance3. Resilient methodological advances for analysing justice-oriented transitions across scales4. Digitalisation and smart infrastructures as catalysts to inclusive sustainability.
