This Research Topic is open to all speakers and attendees of iCDEM-2026. Learn more about the conference. If you are interested in submitting to this topic please contact the journal team at carbon@frontiersin.org Research into diamond and diamond-like carbon (DLC) materials is a highly dynamic and rapidly advancing area, propelled by ongoing innovations in synthesis, doping, characterization, and device integration. Lab-grown diamond are recognized for their remarkable combination of ultra-wide band gap, outstanding mechanical strength, high thermal conductivity, and exceptional chemical stability,  and DLC for their exceptional wear resistance and chemical stability positioning them at the forefront of numerous scientific and technological pursuits. Recent investigations showcase their broadening impact in quantum technologies, photonics, advanced electronics, and as robust coatings for applications in energy, space, and biomedical fields. The refinement of synthesis methods, precise control of impurities, and continuous progress in characterization techniques are unlocking new possibilities and expanding the functionality of these advanced materials.Innovative approaches are enabling a new level of control over the structure and properties of diamond and DLC, which is leading to the development of breakthrough device concepts and multifunctional surface coatings. The use of modeling tools and the integration of AI or machine learning-driven monitoring are enhancing synthesis reliability and facilitating new opportunities for material optimization. At the same time, progress in laser-based post-processing and surface modification is broadening the reach and adaptability of these materials. Collaborative research across physics, chemistry, materials science, and engineering is deepening our understanding of diamond and DLC, and promoting their successful adoption within complex and integrated systems across a spectrum of industries. This Research Topic seeks to showcase the most significant recent advances and encourage broad collaboration among the global diamond and DLC community, reflecting the innovative spirit of the https://www.icdem.org/ International Conference on Diamond and Emergent Materials: Science and Technology (iCDEM-2026). By offering a platform to share the latest achievements from synthesis through to practical applications, this collection aims to foster further progress in the fields of quantum technologies, energy, space, fusion, tribology, biomedical technology, and beyond. To gather further insights in the synthesis, functionalization, and multidisciplinary utilization of diamond and diamond-like carbon, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes: • Innovations in synthesis, growth, and doping of lab-grown diamond and DLC • Advanced characterization and metrology for material and device optimization • Device physics and engineering in ultra-wide band gap diamond and related materials • Applications in quantum technologies, photonics, sensing, and metrology • Diamond and carbonaceous materials for energy, space, and fusion applications • Advanced strategies for heterogeneous integration and packaging • Techniques for laser marking, polishing, and post-processing of diamond and DLC • DLC and diamond coatings for tribological, electrochemical, and biomedical functions • Modeling, simulation, and AI or machine learning-driven approaches for growth monitoring and material design Topic editors: Anirudha Sumant, Marco Girolami, Ariful Haque Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76945/emergent-directions-in-diamond-and-diamond-like-carbon-insights-from-icdem-2026
