Emerging Computational Methods and Bioinformatics Tools for the Analysis of Complex Biological Data
The rapid expansion of high-throughput technologies has transformed biological research, generating vast and increasingly complex datasets spanning genomics, transcriptomics, proteomics, metabolomics, and beyond. Extracting meaningful biological insight from this data demands sophisticated computational approaches that can handle scale, noise, heterogeneity, and multi-modal integration- challenges that sit at the intersection of computer science, statistics, and life sciences. This Research Topic brings together innovative work in computational intelligence and bioinformatics, in partnership with the Conference on Computational Intelligence methods for Bioinformatics and Biostatistics (CIBB). CIBB has long served as a premier forum for researchers developing and applying machine learning, deep learning, and data-driven methods to biological and biomedical problems. This collection extends that scientific dialogue, offering a dedicated venue for full-length research articles that push the boundaries of what computational methods can reveal about living systems. We welcome submissions covering, but not limited to, the following themes:o Machine learning and deep learning for genomic, transcriptomic, and proteomic data analysiso Network-based and graph methods for the study of biological interactions and pathwayso Multi-omics data integration and dimensionality reduction approacheso Single-cell data analysis - clustering, trajectory inference, and spatial transcriptomicso Structural bioinformatics - protein structure prediction, docking, and function annotationo Explainable AI (XAI) for biological discovery and model interpretabilityo Benchmarking and evaluation of bioinformatics pipelines and toolso Software and tool development with demonstrated biological applicationThis Research Topic particularly encourages extended submissions from CIBB conference participants, as well as original contributions from the broader bioinformatics and computational biology community. All manuscripts will undergo rigorous peer review in line with Frontiers’ open science standards.By consolidating cutting-edge methodological advances in a single open-access collection, this Research Topic aims to accelerate the development of the next generation of bioinformatics tools and their translation into biological insight and clinical impact.
