Emerging Design and Technologies for Sustainable Metaverses: A Cross-disciplinary Exploration
The metaverse excites. Zuckerberg (2021) extended the idea of ecosystems, loose coupling among Facebook-WhatsApp-Instagram, and interaction to facilitate social networking/sharing and matching of desirable opportunities across disciplines (open market basket analyses). Architecturally, it implies utilizing metadata, technological stacks, and pre-determined or discoverable criteria and weighting to create novelty/surprises, which suit/enhance the user’s preferences and interests.Mashable, a meta news portal, leads the way with its 9 sub-Mashables across 9 geographical regions. Rich in cultural diversity, each sub-Mashable adapts from the main Mashable. The aggregation of data from each sub-Mashable creates a deeper understanding of the stories, aspirations, and concerns of the people they represent. Some are embarking on e-commerce. The opportunities for technological stacks across regions can create new user experiences. How to be sustainable amidst prior failures is a challenge.Assuming that the metaverse is not hype, this research topic thus looks at the following questions:• What are critical success factors and challenges to successful metaverses and synergies/mixes?• How can we extend/transform between/among industries online and offline to e-commerce and job creation, and be sustainable? Which supporting factors need to be considered?• Which criteria and metrics should be used to determine complementary matches? Criteria and weighting are usually pre-determined dynamically. However, they may also be discoverable to suit different contexts and user preferences. • How can systems autonomously discover/adapt these criteria and weighting? The following are especially encouraged: • Social science case studies (including semantics, semiotics, art, and the performing arts)• Value creation, entrepreneurship, and job creation• Sustainable development and transfer/transformation• Software and requirements engineering, and/or industrial design• Multi-intelligent agents, and the discoverable Semantic Web• Retrieval, augmentation, and generation of large language models• Cognitive science and optimization of personalized pathways/experiences Topic editors: Chien-Sing Lee, Giancarlo Fortino Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/75512/emerging-design-and-technologies-for-sustainable-metaverses-a-cross-disciplinary-exploration
