Emerging Frontiers in Electromagnetics: Selected Contributions from RINEM 2026
Electromagnetics continues to play a central role in the development of modern science and technology, driving innovation in communications, sensing, imaging, healthcare, industry, transportation, and space applications. Recent years have witnessed a rapid evolution of the field, fueled by advances in computational modeling, artificial intelligence, advanced materials, reconfigurable systems, and emerging wave-based technologies. This evolution is progressively blurring the boundaries between traditionally separated research areas and promoting increasingly interdisciplinary approaches that combine theory, numerical methods, experiments, and system-level integration. In this context, the Italian electromagnetics community, coordinated through SIEm (Società Italiana di Elettromagnetismo), actively contributes to the advancement of the field by fostering scientific exchange and collaboration across academia, research institutions, and industry. RINEM represents the main forum where these research activities, emerging trends, and technological developments are presented and discussed. The proposed Research Topic aims to collect and disseminate high-quality contributions addressing emerging challenges and recent advances in modern electromagnetics. Building upon the scientific framework of RINEM 2026, this Research Topic seeks to collect substantially extended, peer-reviewed, and positioned within the international state of the art contributions, and to highlight innovative methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and emerging technological directions across the broad field of electromagnetics. The collection aims to promote the exchange of ideas among researchers working in different but interconnected domains and to provide a representative overview of current research trends and future perspectives in electromagnetics and related technologies. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review papers, and perspective contributions addressing recent advances in electromagnetics and related technologies. The collection aims to cover both theoretical and application-oriented developments, with particular emphasis on emerging methodologies, interdisciplinary approaches, and innovative electromagnetic systems.Relevant themes include, but are not limited to: • analytical and computational electromagnetics • antennas and propagation• wave scattering• microwave and THz systems• radar and remote sensing • imaging and inverse problems• metamaterials and metasurfaces• optics and photonics• electromagnetic compatibility• sensing technologies• artificial intelligence in electromagnetics• smart electromagnetic environments• biomedical applications• measurements and metrology• industrial and space applications.Submitted manuscripts should provide significant theoretical, numerical, experimental, or technological contributions within the broad field of modern electromagnetics.
