Emerging Photonic and Plasmonic Technologies for Advanced Sensing Applications

In the recent era of science and technology, sensors have become fundamental enablers of innovation. Photonic and plasmonic sensors, in particular, have proven to be driving forces across environmental monitoring, energy systems, and communication networks. Advances in photonics, nanomaterials, plasmonics, and quantum technologies have significantly contributed to the rapid development of modern optical sensing technologies. These advancements have greatly improved sensor performance in terms of sensitivity, selectivity, miniaturization, response time, and real-time data processing. As optical sensing platforms continue to evolve, interdisciplinary collaboration has become essential for translating fundamental photonic principles into practical solutions. This Research Topic aims to provide a platform for presenting recent advances in fundamental science of optical and plasmonic sensor technologies that integrate innovations in physics, photonics, and data-driven approaches to address emerging environmental and industrial challenges. The rapid development of these sensing technologies has offered new and exciting opportunities for addressing complex challenges, however many optical sensing systems still face limitations in terms of sensitivity, stability, selectivity, scalability, energy efficiency, integration, and deployment in real-world environments. At the same time, the increasing convergence of advanced materials, photonics, artificial intelligence, and data analytics is transforming the design and functionality of next-generation optical sensors with enhanced performance. This Research Topic aims to bring together researchers working on the fundamental principles, design methodologies, fabrication techniques, characterization, modelling, and light-matter interaction underlying advanced photonic and plasmonic sensor technologies for environmental, industrial, and quantum sensing applications. The major objective is to encourage contributions that highlight novel sensing mechanisms, integrated optical sensing platforms, and emerging technologies capable of improving sensing performance, reliability, and adaptability. Submissions should demonstrate a substantive advance in the underlying optical or plasmonic mechanism, material, or design rather than an engineering optimization or application-only implementation of existing technology. This Research Topic welcomes original research articles, review articles, mini reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers related to recent advances in optical and plasmonic sensor technologies. The scope includes the design, fabrication, modelling, and characterization of advanced optical sensing systems, with a focus on novel optical or plasmonic sensing mechanisms rather than engineering or production processes. Both theoretical and experimental studies that advance the fundamental understanding of the field are welcome.
