Emerging Strategies on Bioactive Biomaterials for Enhancing Tissue Regeneration

Tissue regeneration remains one of the most dynamic frontiers in modern regenerative medicine, demanding solutions that seamlessly merge advanced material science with biological engineering. Standard therapeutic options often face clinical limitations, including poor biocompatibility, inadequate mechanical properties, and subpar integration with host tissues. To overcome these hurdles, current research is rapidly pivoting toward the design of next-generation biomaterials, such as bioactive scaffolds, hydrogels, and smart membranes, that do more than act as passive templates. Instead, these innovative platforms are engineered to actively direct cellular behaviour, modulate local inflammatory environments, and deliver biological signals. By mimicking the native extracellular matrix, these new materials and biological strategies present highly promising pathways to accelerate tissue repair and restore functional integrity across various physiological systems. The goal of this Research Topic is to showcase the latest breakthroughs in the development and functional evaluation of innovative biomaterials and biological strategies for tissue regeneration. We aim to collect high-quality research that bridges the gap between fundamental biomaterials engineering and practical, translational application. This collection will focus on how molecular design, surface modifications, and advanced fabrication technologies (such as 3D bioprinting) translate into enhanced biological performance, functional tissue repair, and accelerated healing. By assembling a diverse range of pre-clinical and translational perspectives, this topic seeks to establish a comprehensive roadmap for researchers working to move advanced material concepts from the laboratory bench closer to the pre-clinical stage. Ultimately, this collection will highlight how biological interfaces can be engineered to systematically optimise regenerative outcomes. This Research Topic welcomes Original Research, Reviews, Mini-Reviews, and Perspective articles focusing on pre-clinical and translational biomaterials development. We particularly welcome submissions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Design, synthesis, and characterisation of novel bioactive scaffolds, hydrogels, and membranes for tissue engineering.• Advanced biofabrication techniques, including 3D bioprinting and nanotechnology.• Pre-clinical in vitro and in vivo models evaluating biomaterial-cell interfaces, biocompatibility, and tissue integration.• Innovative biological delivery strategies for growth factors, genes, or regenerative cells.• Immunomodulatory materials designed to guide tissue repair.
