Endocrine and Neuroendocrine Features in the Developmental Origin of Health and Disease

Currently, non-communicable chronic diseases (NCDs) are one of the primary concerns of healthcare systems worldwide. Since the early hypotheses of Barker in the mid-20th century, numerous studies have demonstrated the consequences of early exposure on the development of complex biological systems. These early reports describe the permanent cardiovascular adverse effects in patients submitted to prenatal undernourishment. Furthermore, extensive evidence has demonstrated the importance of not only the early nutritional environment but also exposure to stress, endocrine disruption, and other factors in the development of tissues and organs. These adaptations could become etiological components of several armful pathologies. In this context, it is essential to identify new molecular etiological components of the programmed NCDs, particularly those related to endocrine and neuroendocrine etiological features. Additionally, it is crucial to develop innovative and novel therapeutic approaches for the control of NCDs. This special issue aims to identify and gather new evidence that supports the understanding of the endocrine and neuroendocrine essential features of programmed pathologies, particularly non-communicable diseases (NCDs), resulting from early exposure to harmful conditions. Additionally, special attention would be given to evidence that identifies new pharmacological or therapeutic targets for the treatment of NCDs. We welcome submissions of original basic and clinical studies, reviews, and in the following subtopics, but not limited to:● Basic studies aimed to identify new molecular and cellular components of NCDs. ● The development of new therapeutic approaches for the treatment/prevention of NCDs.● Testing of new therapeutic technologies for the treatment of NCDs.● Clinical studies aimed at the validation of the developmental origins of NCDs. This includes large-sample studies, case-control studies, and randomized clinical trials.
