Endocrine Disorders and Ocular Outcomes: Metabolic Pathways, Therapeutic Strategies, and Clinical Implications
Endocrine disorders, particularly diabetes mellitus, represent a growing global health burden with far-reaching systemic consequences. Beyond classic metabolic and cardiovascular complications, increasing evidence highlights profound and clinically meaningful effects of endocrine dysregulation on ocular health. Conditions such as diabetic retinopathy, glaucoma, age-related macular degeneration (AMD), cataract formation, and ocular surface disease are increasingly recognized as interconnected with endocrine and metabolic pathways. This Topic Collection aims to explore the bidirectional relationship between endocrine disorders and ocular outcomes, with a particular emphasis on how contemporary and emerging treatments influence eye health. While diabetes will serve as a central focus, the scope will extend to other endocrine conditions, including thyroid disease, osteoporosis, metabolic syndrome, and disorders of lipid and calcium metabolism, and their associations with ocular structure, function, and disease progression. We welcome original research, clinical studies, translational investigations, and comprehensive reviews addressing mechanisms linking endocrine dysfunction to ocular pathology, as well as the ocular implications of endocrine therapies. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:• Effects of glucose-lowering therapies (e.g., insulin, GLP-1 receptor agonists, SGLT2 inhibitors) on retinal and optic nerve outcomes• Endocrine influences on glaucoma, AMD, and retinal vascular disease• Molecular and inflammatory pathways connecting metabolic dysregulation to ocular degeneration• Impact of thyroid and bone metabolism disorders on ocular tissues• Real-world evidence, population-based studies, and health disparities related to endocrine treatment and ocular disease risk• Novel therapeutic strategies and interdisciplinary care models bridging endocrinology and ophthalmologyBy bringing together expertise from endocrinology, ophthalmology, epidemiology, and translational science, this Topic Collection aims to advance understanding of shared disease mechanisms, inform clinical decision-making, and highlight opportunities for integrated care that improves both systemic and visual outcomes.
