Endocrine Regulation of Metabolism in Aging

Aging is associated with progressive alterations in endocrine signalling that disrupt the regulation of energy balance and metabolic homeostasis. Changes in hormonal sensitivity, nutrient sensing, and inter-organ communication contribute to metabolic disturbances observed later in life, including increased adiposity, impaired glucose regulation, and loss of metabolic flexibility. These processes reflect coordinated adaptations across multiple endocrine tissues rather than isolated organ dysfunction.Neuroendocrine pathways play a central role in integrating metabolic signals during aging. Interactions between the brain and peripheral metabolic organs, including adipose tissue, liver, and muscle, are critical for maintaining energy balance and responding to nutritional and environmental challenges. With aging, these regulatory systems become less efficient, contributing to altered hormone signalling, reduced metabolic adaptability, and increased susceptibility to metabolic disorders. This Research Topic aims to explore the endocrine regulation of metabolism during aging, with particular attention to systemic metabolic adaptation and the integration of neural and hormonal signalling. Contributions are encouraged from experimental, translational, and clinical research that investigate how endocrine pathways are altered with age and how these changes influence metabolic health and functional decline. Topics of interest include, but are not limited to:- Hormonal regulation of energy balance during aging- Central and peripheral mechanisms of metabolic hormone signalling during aging- Endocrine control of metabolism and energy homeostasis in aging- Central regulation of metabolic homeostasis during aging- Role of leptin and related hormones in age-related metabolic adaptation and resistance- Nutrient sensing and metabolic signalling pathways in endocrine tissues during aging- Inter-organ communication in metabolic regulation during aging- Interventions targeting endocrine and metabolic pathways to support healthy aging Topic editors: Adrián Plaza, Victoria Cano, Beatriz Merino Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80824/endocrine-regulation-of-metabolism-in-aging
