Endocrine Regulation of Women’s Respiratory and Cardiovascular Health: From Mechanisms to Clinical and Computational Insights.

Women experience distinct patterns of respiratory and cardiovascular diseases that are strongly influenced by endocrine regulation across the lifespan. Fluctuations in estrogen, progesterone and other hormones during the menstrual cycle, pregnancy, menopause and hormonal therapies shape airway responsiveness, immune activation, vascular tone and cardiac physiology. These endocrine-driven interactions help explain sex-specific differences in asthma, pulmonary hypertension, arrhythmias and ischemic heart disease, yet the underlying mechanisms remain incompletely understood. Advances in molecular biology, imaging and computational analysis now offer new opportunities to unravel how hormonal signalling integrates respiratory and cardiovascular function in women. This Research Topic aims to bring together mechanistic, clinical and computational perspectives to deepen our understanding of endocrine regulation in women’s cardiopulmonary health and to support the development of more precise, sex-informed diagnostic and therapeutic strategies. Despite growing recognition that sex hormones profoundly influence respiratory and cardiovascular physiology, the mechanisms by which endocrine factors shape women’s cardiopulmonary health remain insufficiently defined. Clinical presentations of asthma, pulmonary vascular disease and cardiovascular disorders often differ in women, yet current diagnostic and therapeutic approaches rarely account for hormonal status, reproductive stage or endocrine transitions such as pregnancy and menopause. This gap limits the precision and effectiveness of care for many women. The goal of this Research Topic is to address this unmet need by integrating mechanistic, clinical and computational insights into how endocrine regulation influences respiratory and cardiovascular systems. By bringing together work across disciplines, we aim to identify key pathways, refine phenotypes and promote sex-informed strategies that can ultimately improve prevention, diagnosis and treatment for women.• Hormonal regulation of airway inflammation, bronchial responsiveness and asthma phenotypes in women• Endocrine influences on vascular tone, endothelial function and cardiovascular remodeling• Cardiopulmonary impacts of menstrual cycle fluctuations, pregnancy, menopause and hormonal therapies• Mechanistic pathways linking sex hormones to immune, metabolic and autonomic regulation in the lungs and heart• Sex-specific clinical presentations and diagnostic challenges in respiratory and cardiovascular diseases• Interactions between endocrine disorders and cardiopulmonary outcomes in women• Machine-learning approaches to identify hormone-linked respiratory and cardiovascular risk patterns in women• AI-driven analysis of imaging, wearable data or multi-omics profiles to uncover endocrine influences on cardiopulmonary health Topic editors: Shiyan Tang, Jie Ji, Toluwalase Awoyemi, YIRUI JIANG Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/76361/endocrine-regulation-of-womens-respiratory-and-cardiovascular-health-from-mechanisms-to-clinical-and-computational-insights
