Endodontic Materials based on hydraulic cements: Physicochemical, Antimicrobial, and Biological Performance Datasets
Endodontic biomaterials research is advancing through the development of hydraulic cements designed to provide sealing, antimicrobial activity, and biological compatibility with dental tissues. However, variation in material formulations, experimental methods, clinical protocols, and reporting practices limits the comparability and reproducibility of published findings. Valuable data on physicochemical properties, chemical leachates, antimicrobial activity, biological responses, and long-term clinical outcomes remain fragmented and underused, while material-associated complications and failures are often inconsistently documented. This Research Topic applies the FAIR² principles: findability, accessibility, interoperability, and reusability to advance the generation, curation, standardisation, and reuse of high-quality datasets on hydraulic calcium-silicate cements and other bioactive endodontic materials, from bench to bedside. We welcome original research, reviews, and FAIR² datasets with an emphasis on physicochemical properties (setting time, solubility, radiopacity), chemical leachates (ICP-MS analysis), antimicrobial efficacy, pulp-cell biocompatibility, and clinical performance, including case series and long-term follow-up data on material-related complications and failure. We prioritise transparent, well-documented datasets published as FAIR² data articles, to support reproducibility and enable comparative analysis across material systems, methodologies, and clinical outcomes. To advance understanding of material performance, failure and clinical outcomes, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• FAIR²-driven standardisation and curation of physicochemical, antimicrobial, biological, and clinical performance datasets• Physicochemical and chemical characterisation, including setting time, solubility, dimensional stability, porosity, radiopacity, mechanical properties, leachate profiling, ion release, and biomineralization• Antimicrobial activity against endodontically relevant microorganisms and biofilms• Biocompatibility and biological responses in pulp cells and other relevant models, in relation to material composition and processing conditions• Clinical performance and failure data, including case series, long-term patient follow-up, and analysis of material-related complications in vivo• Reusable datasets and predictive modelling, including systematic reviews, meta-analyses, and machine-learning approaches to material performance and failure prediction Topic editors: Josette Camilleri, Matthias Widbiller, Amre Atmeh Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/85041/endodontic-materials-based-on-hydraulic-cements-physicochemical-antimicrobial-and-biological-performance-datasets
