Endometrial Stem Cells in Reproductive Endocrine Health and Disease

The human endometrium is a uniquely regenerative tissue that undergoes cyclical remodeling in response to hormonal fluctuations across the reproductive lifespan. This regenerative capacity is increasingly attributed to endometrial stem and progenitor cells, which reside in specialized niches and support tissue renewal, repair, and functional adaptation. Growing evidence suggests that endocrine signals, particularly estrogens and progesterone, play a central role in regulating stem cell activity, influencing proliferation, differentiation, and cellular plasticity. Dysregulation of these processes has been implicated in a range of reproductive disorders, including infertility, recurrent implantation failure, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and endometrial cancer. Advances in single-cell and spatial technologies are now enabling deeper insights into the cellular hierarchies and niche-specific mechanisms that govern endometrial regeneration in both health and disease. This Research Topic aims to define the role of endometrial stem and progenitor cells within the framework of reproductive endocrine regulation. We seek to address how hormonal environments shape stem cell behavior, how alterations in these interactions contribute to disease onset and progression, and whether targeting stem cell populations can offer new diagnostic or therapeutic opportunities. By integrating basic, translational, and clinical research, this collection will clarify the mechanisms underlying endometrial regeneration and identify how stem cell dysfunction contributes to reproductive pathology. We welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• Identification and characterization of endometrial stem and progenitor cell populations and their niches• Hormonal regulation of stem cell proliferation, differentiation, and lineage commitment• Stem cell dynamics across the menstrual cycle, implantation, and aging• Role of stem cells in infertility, implantation failure, endometriosis, adenomyosis, and endometrial cancer• Interactions between stem cells and local niche components, including stromal, vascular, and immune cells• Application of organoids, single-cell omics, and lineage tracing in endometrial stem cell research• Stem cell-based regenerative approaches and therapeutic strategies in reproductive medicine• Biomarkers linked to endometrial stem cell function and clinical outcomes Topic editors: Takashi Kajitani, Rachel WS Chan Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/81275/endometrial-stem-cells-in-reproductive-endocrine-health-and-disease
