Engineering Mesenchymal Stem Cell-Derived Extracellular Vesicles for Regenerative Therapy: From Cargo Design to GMP-Scalable Production
This Research Topic focuses on advancing MSC-derived extracellular vesicles as next-generation therapeutics, with an emphasis on the engineering, preconditioning, and manufacturing innovations required to move them toward clinical translation. It addresses key product-level bottlenecks currently limiting clinical adoption, including reproducible cargo loading, surface engineering for tissue-specific targeting, donor and culture variability, and scale-up to GMP-compliant manufacturing.Areas of focus include EV engineering strategies such as surface functionalisation, active miRNA and protein cargo loading, membrane hybridisation, and cell-free production methods, alongside preconditioning approaches that enhance EV potency and therapeutic cargo. Studies on cargo characterisation standards, potency assays, and therapeutic validation in models of radiation injury, ischaemic and inflammatory disease, and tissue repair are also welcomed within this scope.
