Enhancing IoT Security and Management with Intent-Based Networking

Intent-Based Networking (IBN) is a transformative approach in the field of network management, particularly relevant in the context of the Internet of Things (IoT). As IoT continues to expand, the sheer volume of connected devices has introduced significant challenges in terms of network security and management. Many IoT devices are inherently vulnerable due to outdated operating systems and lack of robust security features, making them susceptible to breaches. IBN offers a promising solution by abstracting network operations to align with application usage, thereby enhancing user experience and security. Recent studies have highlighted the potential of IBN to automate network configurations based on high-level intents, such as ensuring data security for specific user groups. However, the complexity of IoT networks raises questions about the effective expression and execution of these intents. Current research is exploring how to capture and automate intents efficiently, yet there remains a gap in understanding how to manage multiple intents and ensure seamless integration with existing network infrastructures. This research topic aims to explore the potential of Intent-Based Networking in addressing the security and management challenges posed by the Internet of Things. The primary objectives include investigating how intents can be effectively expressed and translated within diverse IoT environments, understanding the mechanisms for resolving conflicts between multiple intents, and developing strategies for automating network functions in line with these intents. By addressing these questions, the research seeks to advance the application of IBN in IoT, ultimately enhancing network resilience, performance, and security. To gather further insights into the application of Intent-Based Networking within the Internet of Things, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:• IoT IBN concepts, architectures, and mechanisms; • IoT IBN enabling techniques: Policy Definition and Abstraction, IntentTranslation and Validation, Real-time Monitoring and Telemetry, Machine Learning and AI, Closed-Loop Automation, Continuous Verification and Compliance; • IoT IBN applications and use cases including 5G and beyond and 6G adaptations; • IoT IBN proof-of-concepts, experimentations; report on field trials and real-world deployments; • Availability, resiliency, performance, trust, and security considerations for IoT IBN;• Recent advances in standardization and open-sourcing.
