Enhancing Sports Injury Management through Medical-Engineering Innovations Vol. II
Sports medicine is increasingly shaped by advances at the interface of clinical practice, biomedical engineering, biomechanics, and digital health. Injuries such as rotator cuff tears, cruciate ligament damage, muscle injuries, and overuse conditions continue to affect athletes and physically active individuals, often resulting in prolonged rehabilitation, recurrent injury, and reduced quality of life. Although recent developments in advanced imaging, artificial intelligence, wearable technologies, biomaterials, and computational modelling have improved injury assessment and treatment, important challenges remain in translating these innovations into reliable, accessible, and patient-centred clinical solutions. In particular, greater attention is needed to long-term recovery, injury recurrence, remote monitoring, functional outcomes, and safe return to sport. This Research Topic aims to build on the advances presented in Volume I by highlighting emerging medical-engineering approaches for personalized injury management across the continuum of care. It will focus on how interdisciplinary technologies can improve injury-risk assessment, diagnosis, treatment planning, rehabilitation monitoring, and return-to-sport decision-making. The Research Topic will also examine how patient-specific data, biomechanical analysis, artificial intelligence, and smart biomedical technologies can support more precise interventions and improve clinical outcomes. Contributions addressing the validation, implementation, and clinical translation of these approaches are particularly encouraged. To gather further insights into the development and application of medical-engineering solutions for sports injury management, we welcome contributions addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Wearable sensors and remote monitoring for injury assessment and rehabilitationArtificial intelligence and machine learning for injury prediction and outcome assessmentBiomechanical modelling for injury mechanisms, prevention, and recurrence reductionAdvanced imaging and image-based biomarkers for diagnosis and recovery monitoringPersonalized rehabilitation and data-driven return-to-sport strategiesBiomedical technologies for tissue repair and functional recoveryInnovative biomaterials and bioengineering approaches for sports injury treatmentDigital health platforms and tele-rehabilitation for individualized careTechnology-assisted physical therapy and functional performance assessmentPatient-specific modelling and decision-support systems in sports medicineClinical translation and validation of medical-engineering interventionsLong-term outcomes, reinjury prevention, and quality-of-life assessmentThis Research Topic will foster collaboration among clinicians, engineers, sports scientists, physiotherapists, and technology developers, with the aim of bridging the gap between experimental innovation and practical applications in the prevention, treatment, rehabilitation, and long-term management of sports injuries.
