Enhancing Wind Turbine Efficiency: Tackling Leading Edge Erosion Challenges

This research topic focuses on the pressing issue of leading edge erosion (LEE) in wind turbine blades, an area of critical importance due to its impact on aerodynamic performance and maintenance costs. The study will investigate the current open questions in the field, such as the effectiveness of various leading edge protection (LEP) materials and the role of surface preparation. By analyzing recent field tests and operational data, researchers will identify the key factors influencing LEP durability and performance. This topic aims to stimulate discussions on innovative materials and techniques to enhance blade longevity, with the ultimate goal of improving wind farm efficiency and sustainability.Goal: The goal of this Research Topic is to gather innovative research and practical insights that improve the understanding, prevention, detection, and management of LEE. We aim to highlight materials and surface engineering advances, robust testing and validation frameworks, data-informed monitoring and repair strategies, and quantified impacts on performance, noise, cost, and sustainability to enable more reliable and efficient wind energy systems.Scope and information for Authors: We welcome focused contributions that advance understanding, prevention, detection, and management of LEE. Topics can include: • Comparative performance of LEP solutions including coatings, tapes, and hybrids• Effects of surface preparation, adhesion, and manufacturing quality on durability• Novel materials, textures, and practical repair and overcoat strategies• Erosion environments, accelerated testing, and lab-to-field correlation including rain, hail, sand or salt, icing, and combined stressors Topic editors: Marianne Rodgers, Margaret Stack Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/74087/enhancing-wind-turbine-efficiency-tackling-leading-edge-erosion-challenges
