Environmental Nanochemistry: Innovative Interfaces for Sustainable Development
Nanochemistry is rapidly redefining approaches to environmental challenges by leveraging molecular-scale materials and processes. As the interface of chemistry and nanotechnology, this field offers unique platforms for pollutant detection, resource-efficient catalysis, and ecosystem monitoring. Recent breakthroughs include the development of smart nanomaterials for sensing and remediation, advancements in sustainable catalyst design, and integrated biopolymer-nanocomposites for greener industrial and agricultural practices. However, the expanding applications of nanomaterials also raise critical questions about their interactions with ecosystems, environmental fate, safety, and potential long-term impacts. Debate continues over the balance of opportunity and risk, regulatory frameworks, and the pace of translating nanochemical insights into global solutions that align with UN Sustainable Development Goals. This Research Topic aims to showcase the most innovative research in environmental nanochemistry, particularly focusing on how nanomaterials and nanoscale processes can mitigate pollution, enhance resource efficiency, and foster climate resilience. The goal is to present both fundamental discoveries and applied technologies, stimulating dialogue across chemists, environmental scientists, materials researchers, and policy makers. By bringing together perspectives from materials science, biology, and environmental governance, this collection will not only demonstrate the transformative role of nanochemistry in sustainability, but will also highlight the importance of safety, ethical, and policy considerations in driving responsible innovation and societal impact. The scope of this Research Topic spans foundational studies to real-world implementations of nanochemistry for environmental benefit, while also welcoming discussion of risk and regulation. We value interdisciplinary approaches and diverse forms of research articles. To further advance the field, we invite contributions on the following themes:• Nanomaterials for pollutant detection and remediation• Quantum dots and nanosensors in environmental monitoring• Biopolymer-based nanocomposites for sustainable agriculture and biomedical applications• Green synthesis of nanomaterials and catalytic applications• Environmental risk assessment of nanomaterials• Nanochemistry for climate adaptation and clean energy solutionsAppendix: We welcome original research, reviews, mini-reviews, and perspectives.
