Eosinophil-Driven Diseases: Understanding the Role of Eosinophils in Tissue and Organ Damage

Eosinophils are a type of white blood cell known for their involvement in allergic reactions and parasitic infections. However, growing evidence highlights their broader role in driving various diseases characterized by inflammation and tissue damage, collectively termed eosinophil-driven diseases. These conditions can affect multiple organs, including the skin, lungs, gastrointestinal tract, and cardiovascular system. Eosinophils contribute to tissue damage through the release of toxic granules, cytokines, and other mediators, leading to chronic inflammation and fibrosis. Understanding the mechanisms by which eosinophils induce organ damage is essential for developing targeted therapies and improving patient outcomes in diseases such as eosinophilic asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis, and Hypereosinophilic syndromes. The goal of this Research Topic is to address the critical role of eosinophils in mediating tissue and organ damage in a wide array of diseases. Despite advancements in understanding eosinophil biology, the precise details of the mechanisms by which these cells contribute to disease pathology remain elusive. This Research Topic aims to fill this gap by highlighting the latest research on eosinophil-driven damage, including studies on signalling pathways, immune responses, and molecular targets for therapy. By gathering contributions from diverse fields, we hope to uncover new therapeutic strategies aimed at mitigating the harmful effects of eosinophil activity and improving clinical outcomes in eosinophil-associated diseases. This Research Topic aims to explore the multifaceted role of eosinophils in driving tissue and organ damage across a range of diseases. We invite contributors to submit manuscripts that address key themes such as:• Molecular and cellular mechanisms of eosinophil activation and their role in T2 inflammation.• Pathways of eosinophil-induced tissue damage, including fibrosis and chronic inflammation.• Clinical insights into diseases such as eosinophilic asthma, eosinophilic esophagitis, Hypereosinophilic syndromes etc.• Current and novel therapeutic approaches targeting eosinophil function or signalling pathways.• Case reports that illustrate the impact of eosinophil-driven pathology in organ systems and/or the efficacy of treatments targeting eosinophil function in rare peculiar diseasesWe welcome original research articles, reviews, and case reports that contribute to a deeper understanding of eosinophil biology and its implications for disease.Topic Editor Dr. Ami Patel receives financial support from Genentech and Novartis.
