Epigenetic regulation of hormone profile and metabolism in clinical endocrinology
Epigenetics is a rapidly expanding field that elucidates how chemical modifications to DNA and histone proteins regulate gene expression without altering the underlying genetic code. In the context of endocrine signaling and metabolic control, evidence is mounting that epigenetic mechanisms—such as DNA methylation, histone modification, and non-coding RNAs—play influential roles in modulating hormone production, receptor sensitivity, and downstream metabolic effects. Recent studies have revealed how environmental factors, lifestyle, and developmental cues can induce epigenetic changes, altering endocrine and metabolic processes and, in turn, influencing susceptibility to metabolic diseases, obesity, diabetes, and other health disorders. Despite these advancements, many mechanistic details remain unclear, particularly regarding how discrete epigenetic modifications interact with hormonal signaling pathways to orchestrate complex physiological and pathological outcomes. Current research is therefore focused on distinguishing causative links, identifying translational biomarkers, and exploring therapeutic interventions targeting the epigenome, with significant gaps remaining in our understanding of tissue-specific and age-dependent effects. This Research Topic aims to advance our understanding of how epigenetic modifications influence endocrine signaling pathways and metabolic regulation, and how these processes ultimately impact overall health. By bringing together fundamental, translational, and clinical studies, the goal is to address key questions such as: How do environmental exposures and life-course events shape the epigenetic landscape governing endocrine and metabolic function? What are the molecular mechanisms by which epigenetic modifications alter hormonal and metabolic pathways? Can specific epigenetic signatures serve as predictive or diagnostic biomarkers for endocrine or metabolic disorders? Furthermore, what are the prospects for epigenetic therapies in mitigating disorders related to these biological systems? The research scope encompasses studies investigating the interplay between epigenetic regulation, endocrine processes, metabolic homeostasis, and health, while prioritizing mechanistic, interdisciplinary, and innovative approaches. Submissions may draw from molecular, cellular, organismal, or population-level investigations, but should focus on the interface between epigenetic modifications and endocrine/metabolic function.
