“Equity in Action: Supporting Transgender and Gender Expansive Population Health, Well-Being & Flourishing through Public Health and Education”
Transgender Day of Visibility (TDOV) functions as a catalyst for advancing population health equity among transgender and gender expansive (TGE) populations. To be witnessed fully and affirmingly is itself a health-protective act, fostering belonging, reducing isolation, and affirming humanity. Emphasizing resilience rather than pathology, visibility helps mitigate minority stress that drives clinical disparities. Visibility helps advance the integration of inclusive and evidence-based, gender-affirming care. Yet visibility is not without risk; increased public presence has also invited heightened scrutiny, targeting, and legislative backlash that threatens TGE safety and wellbeing. These challenges underscore needs for pedagogical mindset shifts, transformational curricular content, and innovative approaches to move health education from cultural competency toward cultural humility. Increased TGE population visibility drives innovation and advancement of TGE health and wellbeing research. Celebrating the full spectrum of TGE existence advances wholeness and comprehensive care for gender expansive individuals while also helping to dismantle disparity-driving systemic barriers. This Research Topic aims to highlight the work of researchers and scholars related to the individual, interpersonal, community, and systems level factors that shape the health and wellbeing of transgender and gender expansive populations through innovative work in public health education, health promotion, and other related fields. We are particularly interested in studies that focus on resilience, resistance, and flourishing in spite of disparities and inequitable treatment.Suitable themes for manuscripts include, but are not limited to:● Navigating the current political & social climate / emerging barriers● Intercommunity and coalition support strategies (e.g., mutual aid)● Advances in TGE health communication strategies● All for all- how minoritized / marginalized communities can support each other● Community-engaged studies that center TGE community-identified topics● Co-developed interventions/programs for shaping public health education, practice, and policy to be more TGE inclusive and supportive● Studies with an emphasis on TGE joy, resistance, and flourishing.
