EVOLVE: (E)volutionary and (V)ariation-driven (O)mics (L)inking plant (V)igor and (E)cosystems
Advances in plant genomics have transformed our understanding of how plants perceive and respond to biotic and abiotic stresses. High-resolution genome assemblies, transcriptomics, epigenomics, and population genomics now allow dissection of resistance loci, signaling pathways, and evolutionary dynamics underlying plant-microbe interactions. However, linking gene-level discoveries to organismal performance, host specificity, ecosystem function, and agricultural resilience remains a major challenge. Plants operate within complex phytoecosystems shaped by pathogens, beneficial microbes, environmental stressors, and anthropogenic pressures. Understanding how genomic architecture, immune signaling networks, stress-responsive transcription factors, and genome defense systems coordinate these interactions is essential to predict plant adaptation and sustain ecosystem services critical to food security and biodiversity. This Research Topic aims to bridge molecular genomics with ecological and evolutionary perspectives of plant-microbe interactions. Despite the rapid identification of resistance genes, quantitative trait loci, stress-inducible transcription factors, and genome defense components, their integration into coherent biological networks that explain host specificity, systemic immunity, and ecosystem resilience remains incomplete. We seek to assemble contributions that elucidate how genomic variation, regulatory networks, and epigenetic mechanisms shape plant immunity across scales which inlcudes contribution from intracellular defense signaling to population-level adaptation and phytoecosystem stability. By integrating functional genomics, comparative genomics, genome architecture, and systems biology approaches, this collection will highlight how plants balance growth, stress responses, and immune competence in diverse environments.Ultimately, this Research Topic will advance mechanistic and predictive frameworks linking genomic information to sustainable agriculture, disease resistance breeding, and ecosystem services in the context of climate change and emerging pathogens. We welcome original research articles, short communications, mini reviews, reviews, perspectives, and methodological papers addressing:1.
