Exercise and Physiotherapy Strategies for Movement, Postural Control, and Balance in Parkinson’s Disease
Parkinson’s disease (PD) is a progressive neurodegenerative disorder marked by motor symptoms including bradykinesia, rigidity, tremor, and postural instability, all of which severely impact gait, mobility, and balance, leading to an increased risk of falls and a reduced quality of life. As one of the most prevalent and fastest-growing neurological conditions worldwide, PD imposes substantial challenges not only on individuals but also on healthcare systems and caregivers across different regions and socioeconomic contexts. Although pharmacological interventions have traditionally been central to symptom management, exercise and physiotherapy have become vital components of comprehensive care. Recent advancements in therapeutic exercise modalities and physiotherapeutic strategies demonstrate potential benefits in improving movement quality, postural control, and balance in individuals with PD. Yet, the diversity of approaches and inconsistent clinical results highlight a pressing need for enhanced investigation and innovation in this continually evolving field. This Research Topic aims to unite groundbreaking research and clinical perspectives to optimize exercise and physiotherapy interventions targeting movement, postural control, and balance in Parkinson’s disease. We seek to address current knowledge gaps concerning the most effective, accessible, and sustainable strategies to support individuals with PD throughout their disease journey. By encouraging a multidimensional dialogue among scientists, clinicians, and rehabilitation specialists, this collection intends to illuminate the mechanisms behind exercise-induced motor function improvements, evaluate both emerging and established physiotherapy protocols, refine outcome measures that can reliably capture clinically meaningful changes, and identify barriers and facilitators to implementing exercise interventions. Additionally, it highlights the benefits of personalized and multidisciplinary approaches to pave the way for evidence-based guidance directly translatable into clinical practice, ultimately enhancing outcomes for patients and caregivers. To gather further insights into exercise and physiotherapy strategies for movement, postural control, and balance in people with Parkinson’s Disease, we welcome submissions across a diverse range of manuscript types supported by the journal—including Original Research, Brief Research Reports, Perspectives, Protocols, Mini-Reviews, and more—exploring, but not limited to, the following themes:- Innovative exercise regimens- Digital and remote interventions- Neurophysiological mechanisms underpinning rehabilitation- Optimization and adaptation of physiotherapy for diverse PD populations- Outcome measurement and assessment tools- Fall prevention strategies- Real-world implementation studies- Long-term adherence, motivation, and patient engagement in exercise programs- Integration of caregiver and family support in rehabilitation strategies- Technology integration, like wearable sensors and virtual reality- Multidisciplinary care modelsJoin us in defining the future of PD rehabilitation through rigorous research and shared insights within this dynamic Research Topic.
