Exercise-Based Interventions Across the Continuum of Care: From Prevention to Rehabilitation and Performance

The field of exercise science has increasingly recognized the multifaceted benefits of physical activity as both a preventive and therapeutic tool across health, clinical, and sports contexts. Recent decades have seen substantial advancements in exercise prescription for injury prevention, rehabilitation following illness or musculoskeletal pain, and performance enhancement in both athletes, general and health-related populations. However, these applications are often approached in isolation, with fragmented strategies that address only one phase of care. This segmentation overlooks the continuous and interconnected nature of prevention, rehabilitation, and performance optimization, and may hinder the development of comprehensive, patient- or athlete-centered interventions. Ongoing debates surround how best to integrate multidisciplinary knowledge from physiotherapy, sports science, and related fields to maximize the benefits of exercise-based care along the entire continuum. This Research Topic aims to foster a comprehensive perspective on exercise-based interventions by promoting evidence-based integration across the continuum of care: from initial prevention strategies to post-injury rehabilitation and performance optimization. The goal is to encourage interdisciplinary dialogue and knowledge exchange between researchers, clinicians, and practitioners who employ exercise as a central modality, with a view to improving transitional processes between each phase. By addressing current gaps in the literature regarding the continuity of exercise interventions, this Research Topic seeks to provide guidance on best practices for the design, prescription, and assessment of exercise programs in both clinical and athletic environments. The scope of this Research Topic encompasses research addressing the full spectrum of exercise-based interventions. To gather further insights in this area, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:Integrated models of exercise intervention spanning prevention, rehabilitation, and performanceStrategies for transitioning patients and athletes between phases of careMultidisciplinary approaches to exercise prescription and program designNovel assessment methods for tracking progress across the continuumEvidence-based guidelines for exercise implementation in diverse populationsCase studies demonstrating successful integration of interventions across settings Topic editors: Alberto Roldan Ruiz, Gabriele Bertotti Source: https://www.frontiersin.org/research-topics/80477/exercise-based-interventions-across-the-continuum-of-care-from-prevention-to-rehabilitation-and-performance
