Exercise in Aquatic Environment and Health - Volume II
The aquatic environment offers unique conditions for the development of physical activity, exercise, and sport activities. The properties of water, such as buoyancy, hydrostatic pressure, resistance, and temperature, can influence physical, physiological, and psychological responses, allowing interventions to be developed and adapted to different objectives and populations. The Research Topic “Exercise in Aquatic Environment and Health” aims to bring together current and innovative research on all forms of physical activity, exercise, and sport activities undertaken in aquatic environments, including competitive swimming, water polo, artistic swimming, sports training, aquatic exercise, recreational activities, swimming instruction, the development of aquatic competence, infant swimming, water safety, and other related areas. It also includes therapeutic exercise, aquatic rehabilitation, and studies on water exposure, well-being, the effects of water temperature both during exercise and at rest, and the efficient and sustainable management of swimming pools. This Research Topic seeks to deepen knowledge of the benefits, limitations, and applications of aquatic environments across all populations and throughout the different stages of life. It also aims to contribute to the development of safer, more effective, accessible, and evidence-based programmes. We invite researchers from different scientific fields to submit studies addressing topics such as:- The effects of physical activity and exercise in aquatic environments on cardiovascular, metabolic, musculoskeletal, neurological, immune, and psychological health;- Aquatic exercise, rehabilitation, and therapy in clinical and non-clinical populations;- Aquatic exercise programmes for infants, children, adults, older people, and individuals with disabilities or specific health conditions;- Swimming instruction, adaptation to the aquatic environment, aquatic competence, and water safety;- Training, sports performance, and physical conditioning in aquatic environments;- Physical and psychological recovery, relaxation, and well-being;- The effects of immersion and exposure to hot or cold water;- Comparisons between exercise performed in aquatic and land-based environments;- The development and evaluation of new programmes, methods, and intervention protocols;- The use of technologies, equipment, and assessment instruments in aquatic settings;- Barriers, motivation, adherence, accessibility, and participants’ experiences;- Other relevant areas related to physical activity, exercise, and sport activities in aquatic environments and health.Experimental, observational, cross-sectional, exploratory, longitudinal, and methodological studies, as well as systematic reviews, meta-analyses, study protocols, and other relevant scientific contributions, are welcome.Through this second volume, we aim to provide a broad and multidisciplinary perspective on research into physical activity, exercise, and sport activities in aquatic environments and to promote the dissemination of scientific evidence with applications in health, exercise, education, rehabilitation, and human performance.
