Experimental Advances in the Synthesis and Processing of Confined Low-Dimensional Carbon Materials
The synthesis and processing of low-dimensional carbon materials—such as graphene, carbon nanotubes (CNTs), fullerenes, and their derivatives—represent a dynamic frontier in nanoscience and materials engineering. These structures, where electrons are confined in one or more spatial dimensions, exhibit extraordinary quantum, thermal, mechanical, and optoelectronic behaviours that hold promise for next-generation technologies. However, the reproducible fabrication, scalable production, and precise manipulation of such materials remain key experimental challenges. This Research Topic aims to showcase innovative experimental methodologies and processing techniques for the synthesis, coating, deposition, and structural control of 0D, 1D, and 2D carbon-based nanomaterials. A special emphasis is placed on hands-on, reproducible procedures and characterization techniques that push the boundaries of what is achievable with confined carbon structures. We encourage contributions that explore:- Controlled growth of nanocarbons via chemical vapor deposition (CVD), exfoliation, pyrolysis, or bottom-up synthesis.- In-situ and ex-situ modifications, including doping, oxidation, and surface functionalization.- Hybrid and hierarchical nanostructures combining multiple dimensions of confinement (e.g., branched graphene-nanotube hybrids).- Post-synthesis treatments, such as thermal, plasma, or laser processing to alter material morphology and properties.- Advanced characterization methods that enable spatial, compositional, and structural resolution at the nanoscale.- Substrate and precursor engineering to guide growth direction, chirality, and functional integration.Topics of Interest Include (but are not limited to):- Experimental synthesis of graphene via CVD, exfoliation, or emerging methods- Fabrication and alignment of CNTs with novel architectures or properties- Oxidized and functionalized carbon nanostructures- Carbon nanofibers, fullerenes, and their hybrids- Post-synthesis engineering of low-dimensional carbon structures- Novel instrumentation and techniques for real-time or high-resolution characterization- Mechanistic studies of nucleation, growth, and transformation at the nanoscaleWe welcome articles that contribute to a deeper understanding of how to synthesize, manipulate, and scale confined carbon nanostructures for practical applications.
