Exploring Clinical Application Scenarios of Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing for Pathogen Diagnosis - Volume II
Due to the remarkable success of the Research Topic 'Exploring Clinical Application Scenarios of Metagenomic Next-Generation Sequencing for Pathogen Diagnosis' and the rapidly evolving subject area, we are pleased to launch Volume II for this topic.Metagenomic next-generation sequencing (mNGS) represents a groundbreaking diagnostic approach capable of detecting a wide range of pathogens from clinical samples. Unlike traditional diagnostic methods that rely on targeted detection of specific pathogens, mNGS enables broad-spectrum pathogen identification, including rare and emerging organisms. This technology is especially beneficial for immunocompromised patients and cases where conventional diagnostic tests fail to provide conclusive results. Recent studies have highlighted mNGS’ s potential in identifying novel or unexpected pathogens in complex clinical scenarios, such as system infections in immunocompromised patients. However, significant gaps remain in understanding the optimal clinical contexts for mNGS application, including the influence of immune status, sample type, and initial infection suspicion on diagnostic outcomes. This research topic will explore these nuanced applications, aiming to refine the role of mNGS in pathogen diagnosis and treatment decision-making.This Research Topic aims to explore and define clinical application scenarios for mNGS in pathogen diagnosis, particularly focusing on the factors influencing its diagnostic success. Our goal is to enhance the understanding of mNGS as a tool for detecting rare and emerging pathogens in complex cases, guiding its more precise use in clinical settings and further refining diagnostic algorithms. The focus will be on uncovering key determinants, such as immune status and sample type, to optimize its performance and clinical utility. We invite contributions that address the following themes:- Original studies highlighting the benefits and limitations of mNGS as a second-line or first-line diagnostic tool.- Determinants of mNGS positivity in different clinical settings and patient populations.- Comparative analyses of mNGS efficacy across diverse sample types.- Clinical utility of mNGS in identifying novel and rare pathogens.- Methodological advances in mNGS technology to improve sensitivity, specificity, and turnaround time in clinical microbiology.
