Exploring electrochemotherapy as a promising intervention in veterinary cancer care

Electrochemotherapy represents an emerging modality in veterinary oncology, garnering attention for its targeted efficacy in treating various tumor types in animals. By combining chemotherapeutic agents, such a d bleomycin and cisplatin, with electric pulses, this technique enhances drug uptake in cancer cells, thus potentiating therapeutic effects while minimizing systemic side effects. This method is particularly valuable for its ability to treat cutaneous and subcutaneous tumors that might be otherwise challenging to manage with conventional therapies alone, especially surgery. This Research Topic aims to explore the potential and broaden the application of electrochemotherapy within veterinary oncology. The primary objective is to determine its effectiveness across diverse cancer types in animals and to develop optimized protocols that enhance outcomes. The key questions to be addressed include: What are the benefits and limitations of electrochemotherapy compared to standard treatments? How does it affect treatment outcomes, tumor regression, and patient quality of life in different species? What are the optimal doses of chemotherapeutic agents and electric parameters for various tumor types? To gather further insights into the application and effectiveness of electrochemotherapy in veterinary settings, we welcome articles addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:- Clinical efficacy and safety profiles of electrochemotherapy in companion animals- Optimization of electrochemotherapy protocols for different tumor types- Comparative studies of electrochemotherapy versus traditional cancer treatments- Long-term outcomes and quality of life assessments in electrochemotherapy-treated animals- Mechanistic studies on cellular response to the combined therapeutic approachWe invite submissions of various article types, including original research papers, reviews, clinical case studies, and feasibility trials, with the aim of expanding knowledge and fostering innovation in veterinary oncology treatment protocols.
