Exploring Microbial Influences on the Immunity and Metabolism of Farm Animals
In recent years, the microbiome's role within farm animal health has become a focal point of scientific research due to its critical roles in modulating immune and metabolic functions. Studies have shown that microbial populations instigate pivotal interactions with immune cells, such as macrophages, dendritic cells, and T-cells. These interactions are essential for immune tolerance, inflammation regulation, and pathogen resistance. Additionally, the microbiome plays a crucial role in metabolic processes including nutrient absorption and energy regulation, primarily through mechanisms like short-chain fatty acid production and lipid metabolism. However, disturbances in these microbial communities, or dysbiosis, can compromise immune responses and disrupt metabolic homeostasis, adversely impacting livestock health and productivity. The complexity and breadth of these interactions require more targeted investigation to understand how they can be harnessed to enhance disease resistance and optimize growth in farm animals. This Research Topic aims to explore the multifaceted roles that microbiota play in modulating the immune and metabolic functions of farm animals. We seek to deepen our understanding of how microbial communities affect immune resilience, disease resistance, and metabolic functions in farm animals, contributing to more sustainable and efficient livestock production. This exploration is intended to foster developments in sustainable livestock management, potentially leading to increased farm animal health and productivity through strategic microbiome management. We invite submissions that address a broad range of topics, including but not limited to:• The influence of specific microbial communities on immune cell function and pathogen defense mechanisms in farm animals.• Microbiome-driven modulation of metabolic pathways influencing animal growth, feed efficiency, and overall productivity.• The role of the gut microbiota in regulating inflammation and immune responses in the context of infectious diseases.• Interventions targeting the microbiome, such as antimicrobial peptides, probiotics, prebiotics, or dietary modifications, to enhance immunity and metabolic health.• The impact of environmental factors, such as diet or antibiotic use, on the microbiome and its subsequent effects on immunity and metabolism.• Comparative studies of microbiota and immune-metabolic interactions across different livestock species.
