Exploring Oncolytic Virotherapy in Solid Tumor Treatment: Volume II
Following the success of the first volume of the Research Topic "Exploring Oncolytic Virotherapy in Solid Tumor Treatment" (linked here), Volume II aims to continue highlighting advances in this rapidly developing field.Oncolytic virotherapy is an established and promising therapeutic strategy for the treatment of solid tumors. Oncolytic viruses, whether naturally occurring or genetically engineered, can selectively replicate within and destroy tumor cells while largely sparing healthy tissue. The resulting tumor cell lysis can also stimulate potent antitumor immune responses, with the potential to promote tumor regression beyond sites directly exposed to the virus. In 2015, the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) approved the first oncolytic virus therapy for the treatment of melanoma lesions in the skin and lymph nodes. Despite continued progress, important questions remain regarding virus selection, dosing, delivery methods, treatment combinations, and strategies to improve therapeutic efficacy and safety. The primary objective of this Research Topic is to capture the latest developments in oncolytic virotherapy for solid tumors, including non-small cell lung cancer, gastric cancer, breast cancer, colorectal cancer, hepatocellular carcinoma, and other solid malignancies. Particular emphasis will be placed on the effects of oncolytic virotherapy on the tumor immune microenvironment and immune cell responses, as well as the development of novel oncolytic viruses and combination strategies designed to improve treatment efficacy and safety. The scope of this Research Topic is focused on the exploration and advancement of oncolytic virotherapy in solid tumors. We welcome Original Research, Review, and other relevant article types addressing, but not limited to, the following themes:* Engineering oncolytic viruses to more effectively stimulate antitumor immune responses.* Development and use of appropriate animal models to validate immune alterations induced by oncolytic virotherapy.* Novel delivery systems for oncolytic viruses and immunotherapeutic approaches.* Combination strategies involving oncolytic viruses and other immunotherapies in solid tumors.* Combination strategies involving oncolytic viruses and other treatments, including chemotherapy, radiotherapy, electric field therapy, and conventional medical treatments.* Preclinical and clinical studies evaluating oncolytic virotherapy in solid tumors.* Mechanisms through which oncolytic viruses modulate the tumor microenvironment and antitumor immunity.* Strategies to improve the safety, delivery, selectivity, and therapeutic efficacy of oncolytic viruses. Please note that manuscripts consisting solely of bioinformatics or computational analyses of public genomic or transcriptomic databases, without validation in an independent cohort or biological validation in vitro or in vivo, are outside the scope of this section and will not be considered as part of this Research Topic.
